Sardinian traditional costumes
Barbagli has also made pleats for events and traditional festivals as the Feast of the Redeemer in Nuoro which takes place every year.On Sunday next and previous to August the 29th held in Nuoro a parade of colourful costumes from all over the island.
On the morning of the 29th of August takes place the religious ceremony. The faithful gather in the city, in the square opposite the Cathedral, and go on pilgrimage to the statue of the Redeemer, erected on Mount Ortobene by Pope Leo XIII in 1900.
All the traditional costumes of Sardinia have common elements in the design and colours.
But vary in detail, embroidery and pleats in skirts or hats. Differences emerge between town and country, because each has its own identity and therefore their traditional clothes which preserves the historical memory.
But there are also variations because each costume has its own specific use: for parties and for the lives of everyday events and/or special anniversaries, for the rich and the poor, for shepherds and fishermen, for married women to single women and widows. The dress, in the past, emphasized the different stages of life. And each has its purpose and it’s meaning.
